Anatomy is the oldest scientific discipline in medicine and is considered to be the Gateway to Medicine, Surgery and Allied. The foundation of medical practice is based on cognitive concepts, skilled hands and affectionate attitude. The goal of a solid anatomical understanding for a physician is to be able to accurately evaluate a clinical observation and/or imaging, and manage it accordingly. The Anatomy Department of KMU-IMS has been teaching its subject under the MBBS program, in accordance with PMDC & HEC criteria since the foundation of KMU-Institute of Medical Sciences, in 2006.It has recently been recognized by CPSP in 2024, for postgraduate FCPS training in Anatomy. Department of Anatomy comprises of dissection hall, lecture rooms, museum, histology lab and Bone bank, all well-equipped with audiovisual and training aids. The department is subscribed with up-to-date complete 3D anatomy software backed by Elsevier. It also has well-ventilated animal house, to meet the demands of students undergoing postgraduate training. The Department motivates students to take an active role in large group discussions, small group discussions and research activities. Postgraduate training programs and research are undertaken in tandem with other departments, under close supervision. Additionally, it aims to support postgraduate research programs and to give the CPSP postgraduate researchers a platform to publish their research work in reputable national and international journals.
Undergraduate Anatomy course consists of Developmental Anatomy, Gross Anatomy, Microscopic Anatomy, Surface Anatomy, Applied/Clinical Anatomy, Radiological Anatomy and Cross-sectional Anatomy. Examining the human body parts and systems with the aid of standard anatomy models, prosected specimens, 3D computer simulations and histology slides will provide hands-on experience. In accordance with the PMDC curriculum, the subject is integrated with all other basic and clinical subjects, in order to present a holistic view of the structure, normal and abnormal function(s) of major organ systems of the body. Special emphasis is laid on functional aspects & clinical anatomy in each discussion.
