“The brain and mind of the institution”, the Department of Medical Education is although the youngest of all the departments of the institution, yet functions as one of the most important by ensuring coordination among all the established departments. It literally serves as the control tower for all the academic related activities of the institution, ensuring quality education and training of the students in the most appropriate and practical way through coordination among the various departments, as well as planning, implementation, monitoring and review of all academic activities.
Though currently, the tiniest in terms of infrastructure and human-resources, the DME serves as the center around which all the academic activities pivot. The dearth in size and infrastructure is compensated through the involvement and collaboration of all the departments as well as students, which truly make department of medical education one of the most active and lively places on the campus, always hustling with faculty and students seeking guidance and proposing ideas. On the one hand, it aspires to fulfill the commitment the institute offers in term of transforming their off-springs into qualified and skilled professionals and wonderful individuals; on the other hand, it tries to create a conducive and suitable environment for the students to develop personally and professionally as they pursue their and their parents’ dreams. The department feels great honor to be actively associated and connected to the students throughout their five years of medical schooling: a distinction only the DME has among all the departments of the institution. Starting with introducing the first year students to curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular life at KIMS, from the first day of their medical college to the very last session on the last day of final year MBBS, the DME is always engaged in guiding and grooming the students. Besides the key role in the smooth implementation of other components and with support from Behavioral Sciences and Community Medicine departments, the main platform which the Department of Medical Education uses is the PRIME (Professionalism, Research, Identity Formation, Management & Leadership and Ethics) Module which the students undertake throughout the five years of their medical schooling helping them discover their potentials, inculcate the traits of professionalism and positive attitudes that help them develop into better medical professionals and better human beings. Though in the budding stages, the department of medical education has become the hub for planning, implementation, monitoring and assessment of all the activities related to studies in the college. While the apparent focus and priority is to present the curriculum to the students in the most appropriate way, the actual vision of the department of medical education is to help the students equip themselves with the attitudes and behaviors, in addition to the qualifications and skills required, to live their lives in a humane, respectable and productive manner.
