ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Surgery is one of the largest clinical departments at KMU-IMS and plays a central role in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. It provides training in general surgery and subspecialties through structured clinical rotations, operative experience, morning meetings, M&M sessions, journal clubs, and academic workshops. Our facilities include: - Well-equipped modular operating theatres - Dedicated skills lab for procedural simulations - Digital access to surgical video libraries - A dynamic faculty committed to mentoring and assessment The department is recognized by PMDC and CPSP for undergraduate and FCPS postgraduate training. It collaborates actively with departments such as Anesthesia, Orthopedics, and Emergency Medicine for multidisciplinary education and case-based learning.

ABOUT THE COURSES

The Undergraduate (MBBS) Surgical Curriculum is structured in alignment with the guidelines of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) and includes the following components: - Principles of asepsis, surgical anatomy, instruments, suturing - Clinical examination and diagnosis of common surgical conditions - Management protocols for trauma, hernias, appendicitis, breast and thyroid diseases, and abdominal emergencies - Introduction to laparoscopy and minimally invasive techniques - Integration with pathology, radiology, and pharmacology - Emphasis on ethics, communication, and professionalism Teaching Methods: - Ward rounds, bedside teaching, case discussions, DOPS, OMP and SNAPPS. - Simulation-based teaching (e.g., suturing, catheterization, surgical scrub)
