Introduction

The KMU-IMS Research Ethical Committee (KIMS-REC) at KMU-Institute of Medical Sciences (KMU-IMS), Kohat is dedicated to safeguarding ethical standards in all forms of research conducted under the institute. The committee ensures that research proposals are evaluated with respect to participant dignity, confidentiality, and scientific validity, in alignment with national regulations and international ethical frameworks (HEC, DRAP, WHO, ICMJE, and the Declaration of Helsinki).

KIMS-REC independently reviews proposals submitted by:

Faculty members of KMU-IMS
Trainee Medical Officers (TMOs) of DHQ Teaching Hospital, Kohat
Undergraduate MBBS students of KMU-IMS

Vision: To foster ethical, responsible, and high-quality research that advances medical knowledge and benefits society.
Mission: To review, monitor, and guide research proposals with integrity, ensuring that the rights, safety, and welfare of all participants are protected.

Functions of KIMS-REC

Ethical review of faculty, TMO, and undergraduate research projects.
Ensuring informed consent and participant confidentiality.
Conducting risk–benefit analysis of proposed studies.
Monitoring ongoing projects for ethical compliance.
Providing ethical guidance and training to researchers.

Scope of Review

The committee reviews:

MBBS student research synopses.
TMO dissertations and clinical projects at DHQ Hospital Kohat.
Faculty-led funded and collaborative research projects.

Submission & Review Process

Submission – Researchers submit their synopsis/proposal, consent forms, and study tools to the REC Secretariat.
Initial Screening – Secretariat checks for completeness.
Committee Review – Proposal is evaluated in scheduled REC meetings.
Decision – Approval / modifications / resubmission communicated in writing.
Monitoring – Ongoing studies may be subject to progress reporting and compliance checks.

Fast-track reviews may be considered for urgent or public health–related studies
